UN, SANA – The UN Security Council called upon the\u00a0Syrian government and the opposition to\u00a0participate “constructively and without preconditions” in the\u00a0next round of Geneva talks on finding a solution\u00a0to the crisis in Syria.<\/p>\n
In a press statement late Friday, members of the\u00a0Council called on the parties to fully implement\u00a0the cease-fire established in December and urged\u00a0countries supporting both sides to use their\u00a0influence “to help build confidence” and ensure delivery of
\nhumanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
They strongly reiterated support to U.N. special\u00a0envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura’s efforts to\u00a0facilitate a settlement of the crisis in Syria based on the\u00a0June 2012 Geneva agreement.<\/p>\n
Last Wednesday, de Mistura called for holding a\u00a0new round of UN-backed intra-Syrian talks in\u00a0Geneva on March 23. De Mistura said in a press conference in\u00a0New York that Syria’s government and opposition\u00a0groups are invited to resume peace talks in Geneva on\u00a0March 23.”<\/p>\n
Talks will be indirect and will focus on\u00a0governance, constitutional process, elections and\u00a0counter- terrorism and there may also be discussions on\u00a0reconstruction, de Mistura added.<\/p>\n
