Rome, SANA – A Syrian delegation headed by\u00a0Minister of Agriculture Ahmad al-Qadiri took part in the 40th Conference of the UN Food and\u00a0Agriculture Organization (FAO) held in Italy.<\/p>\n
During his speech at the Conference on Tuesday, al-Qadiri called upon the international organizations to increase support to the
\nagricultural sector in Syria and to carry out sustainable development projects which contribute\u00a0to developing and supporting agricultural production in the country.<\/p>\n
The Minister pointed out that the terrorist war\u00a0targeting Syria and its people in addition to the unilateral coercive economic measures
\nimposed on the Syrian people caused damage to all sectors, particularly the agricultural sector,\u00a0and had a negative impact on food security.<\/p>\n
He stressed that the Syrian government gives top\u00a0priority to the agricultural sector through supporting farmers to alleviate the
\nnegative effects of the current circumstances in the country that are caused by terrorism, in\u00a0addition to the challenges caused by climate change.<\/p>\n
Al-Qadiri reviewed the agricultural situation in\u00a0Syria during the past three decades, asserting that Syria achieved self-sufficiency in\u00a0most agricultural products and produced surplus quantities for exportation.<\/p>\n
196 countries and 100 governmental and non-governmental organizations took part in the conference, which end on July 8.<\/p>\n
