Damascus, SANA_ The Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Natalia Kanem, called on governments, civil society and communities to join the UNFPA effort to end violence and harmful practices against women by 2030.<\/p>\n
\u201c \u00a0We must end this scourge, end impunity and leave no one behind, \u201c Kanem \u00a0said in a statement.<\/p>\n
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which falls on 25 November each year, Kanem, reiterated the UNFPA commitment to tackle the physical and emotional effects of gender-based violence and promote the right of all women and girls to live free of violence and abuse.<\/p>\n
\u201c In 2016 alone, our services reached more than 11 million people in 54 countries.\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
The statement added : ” the UNFPA focuses its work, in the 155 countries we serve, on the world\u2019s poorest, most vulnerable women through offering medical care and counseling by UNFPA-supported centers.”<\/p>\n
The UNFPA Executive Director said that \u201cgender-based violence often increases during crises. Yet, gender-based violence is a problem everywhere, every day and not just in crises.<\/p>\n
According to UNFPA statistics one out of three women globally have experienced violence at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n
