Damascus, SANA- Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad affirmed on Thursday that Syria will confront any Turkish aggression or military action against its territory with appropriate response.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe warn the Turkish leadership that in the event of initiating hostilities in the area of Afrin, this will be considered an act of aggression by the Turkish army on the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic\u2019s territories in accordance with the international law known to the Turkish side,\u201d Mikdad said in a statement read to journalists at the Ministry HQ.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the Turkish leadership’s recent remarks raise “our deep concern and the process of beating the drums of war by the Turkish leadership provokes resentment and the total rejection of the Syrian people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe note that the Syrian Air Defense has regained its full strength and is ready to destroy the Turkish air targets in the skies of the Syrian Arab Republic. This means that in the event of Turkish airstrikes on Syria, the Turkish side should realize that it is not going in a picnic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI confirm and hope that the Turkish side will listen well and I also hope that this message will be clear to all whom this may concern that Afrin in particular and the northern and northeastern region of the Syrian Arab Republic has always been a Syrian Arab territory as it will always be,\u201d Mikdad noted.<\/p>\n

Over the past years, Syria has endeavored to build the best relations with the neighboring Turkish people as it has always been keen to ensure that the Turkish people are not harmed, whether within the framework of terrorism or within the framework of preserving the territorial integrity of Turkey, Mikdad said.<\/p>\n

He added that Ankara, in the event of any military action, will complicate its position as one of the sponsors of the settlement in the crisis in Syria and that there will be no difference between the Turkish practices and the practices of the terrorist groups that targeted Syria over the past seven years.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, we must take into account the support provided by the Turkish leadership to the terrorist groups by arming, transferring, financing and cooperating with terrorists in order to kill the Syrians and destroy their country,\u201d the Deputy Minister said.<\/p>\n

In response to a question about Syria’s position on invitation of the UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to hold a special meeting in Vienna between the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic and representatives \"\"<\/a>of the opposition, Mikdad said that \u201cSyria has always responded to any international effort to contribute to ending the crisis. We attended Geneva and Astana and we will be in Sochi for the next few days. The new invitation to attend a meeting in Vienna will be dealt with in the same context, which means that Syria will participate in the Vienna meeting, but the Special Envoy has to practice his role as a mediator and facilitator of these talks and not impose his own agenda on the talks.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went to say that Syria believes that what should be discussed in this round is what the Syrians agree upon without preconditions or preconceptions of the Special Envoy because this is fundamentally contrary to his mission assigned by the UN Security Council and within the framework of UNSC Resolution no.2254.<\/p>\n
