Damascus, SANA – Electricity Minister Imad Khamis discussed with Regional Director of the UN Development Program (UNDP) Jan Thomas Hiemstra the mechanisms of cooperation between the two sides and means to improve the condition of power plants in Syria in a way that ensures supplying power to all citizens around the country.<\/p>\n
Khamis made a review of the situation of the\u00a0electricity sector in the country in light of the\u00a0terrorist war waged against it and the systematic
\ntargeting of power plants, oil pipelines and\u00a0railways by the armed terrorist groups.<\/p>\n
“The Electricity Ministry has made extra steps to\u00a0ensure that all citizens have access to power,”\u00a0Khamis said.<\/p>\n
The Syrian Minister said that the “simplest way to\u00a0perform the noble roles of the UN must concentrate\u00a0on drying up the sources of terrorism and\u00a0prosecuting its financers and backers,” which will\u00a0consequently lead to alleviating the suffering of\u00a0the people exposed to terrorism.<\/p>\n
For his part, the UNDP Regional Director noted\u00a0that the UNDP has modified its work plan in Syria\u00a0to meet the priorities set by the government under
\nthe new circumstances imposed by the crisis.<\/p>\n
Hiemstra proposed a project to contribute to\u00a0improving electricity services in Syria.<\/p>\n
The project provides for securing the necessary\u00a0spare parts for power generating plants and the\u00a0technical support for installation by the
\ngovernment of Japan through the Japanese\u00a0International Cooperation Agency (JICA), according\u00a0to Hiemstra.<\/p>\n
He noted that the implementation of the project\u00a0should be done in coordination between the UNDP\u00a0and the Electricity Ministry, stressing the need\u00a0that the project be a starting point for\u00a0cooperation in other fields to secure all the\u00a0requirements of the electricity sector in Syria.<\/p>\n
