Kuala Lumpur, SANA – Malaysia has joined the\u00a0countries that have been criticizing and\u00a0questioning the effectiveness of the military\u00a0operations carried out by the US and its allies in\u00a0the framework of the recently-formed international\u00a0alliance against the Islamic State of Iraq and\u00a0Syria (ISIS) terrorist organization.<\/p>\n
Malaysian Minister of Defense Hishammuddin Hussein\u00a0told The Star newspaper that the airstrikes waged\u00a0by the US and its allies against ISIS in Iraq and\u00a0Syria “seem to be ineffective so far,” adding that\u00a0“therefore, we need to think of an approach of our\u00a0own.”<\/p>\n
Malaysia has affirmed the need for regional\u00a0cooperation to repel terrorists in Southeast Asia,\u00a0amid increasing fears worldwide of the threat\u00a0those terrorists pose to regional and\u00a0international peace and security.<\/p>\n
Malaysian authorities estimate that there are 40\u00a0Malaysian nationals who have joined the terrorist\u00a0organizations operating in Syria.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, they announced the arrest of 36\u00a0Malaysians over the current year, some of those\u00a0were involved in recruiting persons to transport\u00a0them to fight alongside the terrorist\u00a0organizations in Syria.<\/p>\n
Quoted by the AFP, the Malaysian Defense Minister\u00a0said his country could not work alone concerning\u00a0efforts to confront the threat of terrorism and\u00a0that it should cooperate with its friends and\u00a0neighbors.<\/p>\n
He, at the same time, found it “shocking” that\u00a0some Arab countries have been silent with regard\u00a0to ISIS terrorist organization.<\/p>\n
