New York, SANA-UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for taking appropriate measures to prevent funding terrorist organizations, citing in particular the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria which is engaged in cross-border illegal activities and murky dealings.<\/p>\n
Ki-moon indicated during a UN session dedicated to discuss counterterrorism efforts that 15,000 terrorists from 80 countries poured into Syria and Iraq, joining ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra groups.<\/p>\n
Ki-moon pointed to a raft of measures that have been taken to combat terrorism.<\/p>\n
“Since the adoption of Resolution 2178 less than two months ago, we have taken a number of specific steps,” the UN Secretary-General said.<\/p>\n
“First, the Al-Qaeda Monitoring Team provided an oral briefing to the Council\u2019s relevant committee on the foreign terrorist fighters threat.\u00a0 This will be followed by a report in March 2015.<\/p>\n
“Second, the Counter-Terrorism Committee\u2019s Executive Directorate \u2013 CTED — has prepared a preliminary analysis of the principal capacity gaps in Member State implementation of Resolution 2178.”<\/p>\n
“Third, in order to address these gaps, the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force \u2013 CTITF — has established a UN coordination mechanism to mobilize action to support the needs of Member States.\u00a0”<\/p>\n
“Fourth, the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre has initiated a UN system-wide program on foreign terrorist fighters to develop inter-agency projects to assist Member States.”<\/p>\n
