Damascus, SANA – A workshop on correlating\u00a0university research activities with the society’s needs was held Saturday at Da0mascus\u00a0University stadium with the participation of researchers in various scientific\u00a0specialties and university departments.<\/p>\n

Over a seven day period, the workshop, the second\u00a0in this regard, will discuss issues related to climate and geological changes,\u00a0investing modern technology in local industry, renewable and alternative energy\u00a0sources, developing food and medicine industry, improving medical and dental\u00a0care, regional planning and sustainable development, cultural, intellectual\u00a0and political construction of the society and legislative and administrative\u00a0development.<\/p>\n

Connecting research with needs is “a key tangible\u00a0step towards translating the objectives and message of the universities,”\u00a0Minister of Higher Education Mohammad Amer al-Mardini said in a speech at the\u00a0opening of the workshop.<\/p>\n

This correlation is required for meeting the\u00a0society’s aspirations in the various domains and keeping pace with the\u00a0technical advancements witnessed in the world, he added, citing the significant\u00a0support provided to scientific research in the country.<\/p>\n

Rector of Damascus University Mohammad Hassan al-Kurdi voiced the University’s keenness to have scientific research in the higher\u00a0study stage be focused on meeting the growing development, economic and\u00a0social requirements of the society.<\/p>\n

“What distinguishes this workshop is having\u00a0representatives of public and private sector and Damascus University researchers\u00a0putting forth new ideas towards unifying research efforts,” al-Kurdi said.<\/p>\n

The aspiration is for researches to be at a level\u00a0where they could effectively contribute to resolving many of the problems\u00a0facing the private and public sectors, according to Jamal al-Abbas, the Rector’s\u00a0Deputy for Scientific Research and Higher Studies Affairs.<\/p>\n

He noted that up to 800 figures are nominated to\u00a0take part in the workshop’s axes of discussions, pointing out that the number\u00a0of MA and PhD dissertations at the University that are under study exceeds 5,000.
