On the World Wildlife Day, the Department of Biodiversity, Land and Reserves at the Ministry of State for\u00a0 Environment Affairs seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of maintaining wild animals and plants on\u00a0 economic, environmental and social levels and bring attention to wildlife crime and illegal trade.<\/p>\n
The Ministry has played a key role in protecting wildlife through enacting many laws and legislations to this\u00a0 effect and joining international conventions and protocols that govern the rules and frames of wildlife\u00a0 protection.<\/p>\n
Syria is a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Conservation\u00a0 of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory\u00a0 Waterbirds and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans, in addition to joining Cartagena\u00a0 Protocol on Biosafety and Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the\u00a0 Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.<\/p>\n
During a workshop organized by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Dubai, UAE, the\u00a0 Ministry signed a MoU on the protection of sharks and another MoU on the regional project of the\u00a0 protection of migratory birds.<\/p>\n
In 2015, the Ministry will be working through the National Environmental Observatory on preparing a\u00a0 detailed study and database of the components of wildlife in nature reserves in Syria.<\/p>\n
March 3, 2015 was recently declared by the United Nations as the second annual World Wildlife Day.<\/p>\n
