Damascus, SANA A prayer was held at the Orthodox\u00a0Church of Saydet El Niyah Church (Our Lady of\u00a0Niyah) in al-Zaitoun quarter in Damascus on Monday\u00a0on the occasion of the World Day for Prayer and\u00a0Fasting for Peace in Syria.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis has called, in 2013, for a day of\u00a0fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, in the\u00a0entire Mideast region.<\/p>\n

Greek-Melkite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and\u00a0All the East Gregorios III Laham, who chaired the\u00a0prayer, said We hold this prayer for security,\u00a0safety and peace in Syria, hoping that God will
\ngive back security and peace to the country.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by heads and\u00a0representatives of the Christian sects in Syria, Monsignor Mario Zenari, the Apostolic Nuncio in Damascus and Archbishop\u00a0Cyril Vasil, Secretary of the Congregation for the\u00a0Oriental Churches who is in a current visit to\u00a0Syria delegated by Pope Francis.<\/p>\n

From the very depths of our suffering and pain in\u00a0Syria we cry out with our suffering people, who\u00a0are walking on the bloody way of the cross, and\u00a0appeal to the whole world: Enough of war on\u00a0Syria! Patriarch Laham cried, calling all the\u00a0countries which are waging war against Syria and\u00a0sending the so-called Jihadists to it to stop this
\ncatastrophe .<\/p>\n

\nExpressing the unity among all spectrums of the\u00a0Syrian people, His Beatitude, voiced the\u00a0Christians commitment to their homeland.<\/p>\n

The patriarch urged everyone to stay, to be\u00a0patient, strong, always to hope and to hang on to\u00a0hope, faith and trust in God’s.<\/p>\n

Patriarch Laham hailed the resilience of the\u00a0Syrian people in the face of terrorism.<\/p>\n

Patriarch Laham called on Pope Francis to help the\u00a0Syrian people and to set an initiative for a road\u00a0map that ends the crisis in Syria, stops arming,\u00a0ends violence, terrorism, kidnapping, chaos and
\nthe killing in Syria, particularly in Hasaka, as\u00a0well as in Iraq and Egypt for achieving\u00a0reconciliations and launching dialogue to restore
\nsecurity, safety, fraternity and peace.<\/p>\n

He prayed for God to protect Syria, its army and\u00a0leader, calling for releasing the two kidnapped\u00a0bishops Yohanna Ibrahim and Paul Yazigi.<\/p>\n

For his part, Archbishop Vasil expressed Pope\u00a0Francis wishes that Syria will restore peace.<\/p>\n
