As of January of this year, there were 50 militants\u00a0from France\u00a0in the Northern Military District zone,\u201d the source added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The source indicated that \u201cforeign mercenaries are part of the International Legion of Defense of Ukraine (ILOU).\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Russian Defense Ministry said last week that\u00a0a strike at a building in Kharkov\u00a0the night before killed 60 mercenaries, most of them of French origin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned French ambassador Pierre Levy to tell him that the\u00a0French government\u00a0alone was to blame for the death of its compatriots because it condoned the recruitment of fighters by Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu argued that the government could not stop the French from fighting in Ukraine because they were not part of the national armed forces.
