New York, SANA-Acting U.S. Representative to the United Nations,Dorothy Shea, stressed the importance of supporting and assisting the Syrian government in its efforts to defeat terrorism.<\/p>\n
Reuters quoted Shea during a United Nations Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East as saying: \u201cThe Syrian government has made a clear commitment to combat al-Qaeda and ISIS, both of which are clearly opposed to the new government. Security Council members must not underestimate these threats.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shea added: \u201cWe will continue working with our regional partners to ensure that ISIS and other terrorist organizations do not benefit from Syria\u2019s reintegration into the global economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also called on Security Council members to review Syria-related designations, stating: \u201cThe Council must ensure that UN sanctions do not obstruct Syrian or international efforts to rebuild the country and achieve stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz reaffirmed his country\u2019s support for Syria\u2019s peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts during his address to the Security Council, as reported by Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cDe-escalation and a halt to Israeli aggression are essential for Syria to move toward greater stability and a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Y\u0131lmaz continued: \u201cIt is important from now on to work toward reducing tensions and ensuring the cessation of Israeli aggression,\u201d noting that Israel\u2019s disregard for law, order, and state sovereignty had reached a new dimension following its recent attacks on the capital Damascus.<\/p>\n
Regarding recent events in Sweida Province, southern Syria, Y\u0131lmaz emphasized the need to support the Syrian government\u2019s efforts to restore calm and prevent civilian casualties.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the situation was turning increasingly dangerous due to Israel\u2019s unjustified attacks against the Syrian government.<\/p>\n
Turkish official also noted that the Syrian government had taken concrete steps to embrace all components of Syrian society based on equal citizenship.<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of avoiding any encouragement of actors seeking to exploit existing vulnerabilities to push Syria toward division and fragmentation.<\/p>\n
