New York, SANA – Syria’s Permanent Representative\u00a0to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari said that Syria was\u00a0one of the first countries in the Middle East to\u00a0sign Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1968\u00a0stemming from its conviction that the possession\u00a0of weapons of mass destruction by any country in\u00a0the region constitutes a threat to regional and\u00a0international peace and security, as it is also a\u00a0sort of an extortion of the security of the region\u00a0and its peoples.<\/p>\n
Delivering Syria’s statement Wednesday during the\u00a02015 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference\u00a0debates, al-Jaafari said that Syria has been\u00a0pioneering to call for making the region free of\u00a0nuclear and other Weapons of Mass Destruction\u00a0(WMD), where it submitted during its membership in\u00a0the UN Security Council (UNSC) a draft resolution\u00a0\/\/before the UNSC\/\/on 29th December of 2003 to\u00a0evacuate the area from the lethal weapons.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, he continued to say, Its\u00a0initiative was opposed by UNSC powerful member\u00a0states with the aim of aborting it as to cover\u00a0Israel’s disclaimer from its international\u00a0responsibilities in this regards.<\/p>\n
The Syrian senior diplomat clarified that the\u00a0Syria’s joining Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC)\u00a0in 2013 should be viewed as a basic step towards\u00a0establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Al-Jaafari said .. what was issued by the 2010 NPT\u00a0Review Conference on establishing a zone free of\u00a0WMD in the Middle East based on the resolution of\u00a0the 1995’s Conference makes it a must to obligate\u00a0Israel to join NPT as a side that does not possess\u00a0nuclear weapons just like the other states in the\u00a0region as well as to subject all its nuclear\u00a0activities and facilities to comprehensive\u00a0safeguards of the International Atomic Energy\u00a0Agency (IAEA) according to UNSC Resolution no. 487\u00a0for 1981 and IAEA Resolution no. 17 for 2009, in\u00a0addition to other relevant resolutions.<\/p>\n

Most world countries aspire to the implementation\u00a0of the NPT review conference of 2010, providing\u00a0for holding a special conference on the\u00a0establishment of a Middle East zone free of\u00a0nuclear weapons and all other WMD by the end of\u00a02012 in Helsinki in Finland, al-Jaafari said,\u00a0but Israeli earlier announcement during the IAEA\u00a0Conference in September 2012 its non-participation\u00a0in the aforementioned conference has foiled it and\u00a0made all international efforts exerted in 2010\u00a0Conference void of their\u00a0content, he went on to\u00a0say.<\/p>\n
Showing big concern over the rounds of talks held\u00a0between Iran and the P5+1 group on the so-called\u00a0Iranian nuclear issue, al-Jaafari said.. Syria\u00a0always hopes to reach an agreement that maintains\u00a0Iran’s right in the use of the nuclear energy for\u00a0peaceful purposes,\u00a0He pointed out that Syria, in light of Iran and\u00a0other parties’ statements on reaching a framework\u00a0accord for finding a solution to this issue,\u00a0welcomes the statement issued by the two sides and\u00a0reiterates the importance of the western countries\u00a0carrying out their obligations on lifting the\u00a0unfair economic sanctions imposed on the Iranian\u00a0people over the past years.<\/p>\n
On the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano\u00a0statement that the Agency has concluded that it is\u00a0likely that a building was destroyed in 2007 near\u00a0Deir Ezzor city, to the east of Syria, was a\u00a0nuclear reactor which should have been notified to\u00a0the agency, al-Jaafari lashed out at the UN\u00a0Security Council and the IAEA on not condemning\u00a0the Israeli flagrant aggression on the site in\u00a0Deir Ezzor, may be because they used to be\u00a0lenient with the Israeli violation of their\u00a0legitimate and international resolutions connected\u00a0to our region he mocked.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that Israel rejected to cooperate\u00a0with the agency and allow its inspectors to detect\u00a0for the source of possible contamination caused by\u00a0the Israeli missiles and the materials that are\u00a0used in the destruction and contamination of the
\nsite.<\/p>\n
He criticized Amano’s allegations as groundless,\u00a0calling him to frankly call upon Israel to join\u00a0the treaty and to put all its nuclear facilities\u00a0under the safeguards system of the IAEA.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Syria’s Permanent Representative\u00a0congratulated Algerian Representative for being\u00a0elected as president of the Conference and\u00a0Palestine for joining the NPT treaty as a member\u00a0state.<\/p>\n
He also offered condolences to the Nepali\u00a0government and people on the victims of the\u00a0earthquake recently hit the country.
