Geneva, SANA-Health Minister Dr. Nizar Yazigi demanded that the World Health Organisation (WHO) exert maximum efforts to refill Syria’s stockpile of quality, immunological and genetic medicine, as well as vaccines and medicines for patients with tumor.<\/p>\n
During his meeting with WHO Director-General Margaret Chan at the Geneva-based UN headquarters, Yazigi urged the international health body to provide medical equipment and their spare parts for Syria amid a crippling\u00a0Western blockade that has hit the health sector hard.<\/p>\n
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 68th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) whose activities started on May 18 at the Geneva-based UN headquarters.<\/p>\n
Dr. Yazigi, who heads Syria’s delegation to the session, was elected member of the current session’ general committee.<\/p>\n
The minister said the healthcare institutions in Syria continue to provide services for citizens against tough odds and in spite of incessant terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n
The minister highlighted the health ministry’s efforts that yielded positive results in stabilizing the health situation nationwide as, he said, no epidemics or pandemics have been detected recently.<\/p>\n
Not a single polio case has emerged for over one and a half year since Syria had managed to defeat the disease, the minister added, which he attributed the sound health strategy that the ministry adopted.<\/p>\n
