Damascus, SANA – The Faculty of Architectural Engineering of Damascus University opened on Thursday an electronic library to be at the disposal of the students.<\/p>\n
The library’s contents were re-indexed and archived electronically by voluntary efforts of fourth-year students of the Libraries and Information Department at the university.<\/p>\n
The e-library includes about 5300 titles, mostly in the English language, in addition to Arabic and foreign language-speaking periodicals specialized in architecture.<\/p>\n
There are also science, knowledge and culture books and 500 Master and PhD dissertations.<\/p>\n
Damascus University’s Rector Dr. Mohammad Hassan al-Kurdi said in a statement to reporters after launching the e-library that the university is seeking to keep pace with the rapid technological advancements through adopting a new system for libraries that help provide space for exchanging knowledge and information and enhancing direct interaction and communication.<\/p>\n
There is a plan to generalize this experience to the rest of the libraries at the various faculties of the university, al-Kurdi added.<\/p>\n
In turn, Dean of Libraries and Information Department Dr. Haitham Mahmoud said the students employed the Koha system in automating the library, which took a year to be completed.<\/p>\n
The Higher Institute of Languages at Damascus University opened in April an electronic library with about 5800 titles.<\/p>\n
Another electronic library which included about 5000 titles in various scientific, knowledge and culture fields was launched in the cultural center of al- Baath Arab Socialist Party’s branch in Damascus University on May 17th.<\/p>\n
