{"id":43559,"date":"2015-06-04T11:10:31","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T08:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/?p=43559"},"modified":"2023-01-08T17:00:49","modified_gmt":"2023-01-08T15:00:49","slug":"tourism-faculty-students-tour-archeological-sites-in-old-city-of-homs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/?p=43559","title":{"rendered":"Tourism Faculty students tour archeological sites in old city of Homs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Homs, SANA After restoring security and stability\u00a0to the majority of the neighborhoods of the city of Homs and the halt of the students&#8217;\u00a0activities for more than four years due to the heinous war waged against Syria, a number of<br \/>\nstudents of the Faculty of Tourism organized a scientific tour to a number of neighborhoods in\u00a0the old city of Homs.<\/p>\n<p>The tour included many ancient archeological sites\u00a0in the old city which were demolished and sabotaged by the terrorist organizations, mainly\u00a0al-Zahrawi Palace.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Zahrawi Palace (Qasr al-Zahrawi) is one of the\u00a0most beautiful historic houses in Homs, located in the old city neighborhood of al-Hamidiyeh. This two story building features a delightful courtyard with a central fountain and a<br \/>\nlarge iwan on the southern side. It was constructed primarily of black basaltic stone,\u00a0with some limestone used around the windows and doorways for decoration. The upper floors\u00a0feature numerous arched loggias overlooking the central courtyard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-43581 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students6-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"students6\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students6-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students6.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The present day structure dates mostly from the\u00a0Ottoman era, though some portions of Qasr al -Zahrawi date back to the Mamluk period and\u00a0earlier. The Directorate General for Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) recently restored Qasr al-Zahrawi with the intention of opening it to the public as a museum of Folk Culture and Traditions.<\/p>\n<p>The building suffered significant damage during 2012-2014 of the war waged against the\u00a0country, however, and will be in need of substantial repairs in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The students also toured a number of churches\u00a0which were sabotaged and destroyed by the terrorists, among them the saint Mary of the Holy\u00a0Belt Church and al-Arba&#8217;in Church, dating back to 1920.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Mary Church of the Holy Belt (Um az-Zinnar)\u00a0is a historical Syriac Orthodox Church in Homs. The church is built over an underground\u00a0church dating back to 50 AD. It is the seat of the Syriac Orthodox archbishopric. The church\u00a0contains a venerated relic that is supposed to be a section of the belt of Mary mother of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-43582 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students4-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"students4\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students4-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students4.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The church was damaged at the hands of the armed\u00a0terrorist groups in 2011-2012, as the terrorists used it as a shield .<\/p>\n<p>The students&#8217; tour was concluded by visiting al-\u00a0Bustan restaurant in Homs which was restored following restoring security and stability to the\u00a0city.<\/p>\n<p>The tour is a message emphasizing continued safety\u00a0and stability in the city, Homs governor Talal al-Barazi said,adding that the presence of\u00a0the students in the archeological and tourist sites enhances the concept of linking the<br \/>\nlocal community with al-Baath University to achieve the scientific and vocational benefits for<br \/>\nthe students and the society.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Barazi pointed out that upon the directives of\u00a0president Bashar al-Assad, the studies of rehabilitating and restoring a number of\u00a0archeological and historical sites in the old city\u00a0were outlined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-43577 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students1-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"students1\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students1-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/students1.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He asserted that life start to return to the\u00a0neighborhoods of the old city as many of the displaced people started to return to their homes\u00a0after ensuring main services in the neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>The students told SANA that the tour, which\u00a0included scores of tourist and archeological milestones, aimed at getting acquainted with the\u00a0reality of the neighborhoods in the old city and contribute to encouraging internal tourism<br \/>\namong the Syrian cities.<\/p>\n<p>The Faculty of Tourism, al-Baath University\u00a0includes 900 students in regular education and<br \/>\n2300 others in the open-learning education. The faculty offered a number of tourist cadres.<\/p>\n<p>H.
