They are about to enter a very\u00a0special underworld, far away from the bustling<br \/>\neveryday life in the streets; Hammam Ammouneh, is\u00a0one of the oldest traditional bath houses of\u00a0Damascus and a jewel of Islamic cultural heritage\u00a0which was recently rehabilitated and allocated for\u00a0receiving fatigued women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ammouneh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-44338 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ammouneh-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"ammouneh\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ammouneh-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.sana.sy\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ammouneh.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ammounah bath is considered as one of the oldest\u00a0baths in Damascus and of the first baths allocated\u00a0for women, Deputy Director of Directorate-General\u00a0for Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) Mohammad Nazir\u00a0Awad told SANA.<\/p>\n<p>The bath was recently rehabilitated, but its style\u00a0of construction and decoration were maintained\u00a0through using tradition materials, Awad said,\u00a0elaborating that Ammouneh bath is the only public\u00a0bath house in Damascus which still preserves the\u00a0traditional heating system consisting of ducts,\u00a0chimneys and steam windows.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the free-standing\u00a0bathhouses of Turkey, and\u00a0similar to the public baths in Morocco and Egypt,\u00a0\u00a0Ammouneh bath house \u00a0is adjacent to other buildings, in<br \/>\norder to reduce heat loss through the walls.\u00a0Despite its small scale, Hammam Ammouneh presents\u00a0a rich variety of domes and squinches, typical of\u00a0its historical era.<\/p>\n<p>Hammam Ammouneh is a men-free zone all day long\u00a0till 08:00 PM &#8211; this makes Ammouneh even more\u00a0important to women . It&#8217;s an\u00a0exceptional case, since most hammams in Damascus\u00a0nowadays serve men.<\/p>\n<p>H.
