Damascus, SANA – A two-day national workshop held\u00a0by the Ministry of Education and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to discuss the\u00a0priorities of 2016 strategy kicked off on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Means of responding to the needs of the\u00a0educational sector and the challenges facing the\u00a0Ministry of Education, especially those prompted by the\u00a0current crisis in Syria, are top on the workshop’s\u00a0agenda.<\/p>\n

The aim of the workshop is bridging gabs and\u00a0presenting suggestions and solutions to overcome arising obstacles, with special focus placed on\u00a0addressing the urgent education-related needs of terrorism affected children and adolescents.<\/p>\n

Minister of Education Hazwan al-Waz addressed the\u00a0workshop in a speech in which he underlined the importance of cooperation and coordination and\u00a0sharing responsibilities to handle the educational
\nissues and problems.\"3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He highlighted the need for having such workshops\u00a0and meetings held regularly as they help in laying the bases and principles of cooperation\u00a0with the international bodies to guarantee the students’ right to learn, and consequently\u00a0developing the human resources.<\/p>\n

For her part, the UNICEF Resident Representative\u00a0in Syria Hanaa Singer said before the current crisis, Syria had achieved high standards in\u00a0education with a school enrollment rate of over
\n99%.\u00a0\"4\"<\/a><\/p>\n

She added that the crisis reflected badly on the\u00a0education sector in Syria, increasing dropouts and\u00a0causing low enrollment rates, in addition to the\u00a0number of schools going out of service and students and teachers suffering psychological\u00a0problems due to the terrorists’ attacks.<\/p>\n

Singer referred to the UNICEF campaign, carried\u00a0out in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and its partners, to bring as many children as\u00a0possible back to school, targeting 2.2 million children directly.<\/p>\n

She also cited raising societal awareness\u00a0campaigns that have targeted about 5.3 million\u00a0people.<\/p>\n

As for new programs, the UNICEF representative\u00a0cited the self-education and alternate curriculum programs that are expected to benefit 700,000\u00a0Basic Education children by the end of 2015, in addition to programs for supporting 600 school\u00a0clubs in various provinces.<\/p>\n

Singer also referred to ongoing work to\u00a0rehabilitate 600 schools targeting 300,000\u00a0children and to provide the Ministry of Education with 400\u00a0prefabricated classrooms to accommodate 300,000 children.<\/p>\n

Last April, the Ministry of Education and the\u00a0UNICEF signed a bilateral cooperation plan for the\u00a0year 2015 that focuses on improving opportunities\u00a0for student access to schools.<\/p>\n
