New York, SANA – The UN demanded that Israel\u00a0comply with the international legitimacy’s resolutions on the occupied Syrian Golan,\u00a0particularly the Security Council resolution no. 497 of 1981 that declared Israel’s decision to\u00a0impose its laws and jurisdiction on the Golan as “null and void and without\u00a0international legal effect”.<\/p>\n
The UN’s demand came during the General Assembly’s\u00a0seventieth session held Tuesday at which the Fourth Committee (Special Political and\u00a0Decolonization) approved a draft resolution on “The occupied Syrian Golan”.<\/p>\n
An overwhelming majority of the delegations of\u00a0state members voted in favor of the resolution, in whose preparation 35 states took\u00a0part, which shows the great international support given to the issue of fully\u00a0restoring Golan to the line of June 4th, 1967.<\/p>\n
The resolution provided that Israel immediately\u00a0cancel its decision on annexing the occupied Syrian Golan and declared all the\u00a0legislative and administrative measures and procedures that Israel has taken or will take to\u00a0the effect of changing the features and the legal status of the Golan are “null and\u00a0void”.<\/p>\n
These measures, the resolution said, constitute a\u00a0flagrant violation of the international law and Geneva Convention (IV)\u00a0relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War and have no legal effect.<\/p>\n
The resolution demanded that Israel desist from\u00a0imposing the Israeli citizenship and Israeli identity cards on the Syrian citizens in\u00a0the Golan and stop its repressive measures against its population, calling on all UN\u00a0member states to not recognize any of the Israeli measures and procedures in the Golan\u00a0that are in violation of the international law.<\/p>\n
Following the adoption of the resolution, Syria’s\u00a0Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari said in a statement that Syria\u00a0maintains its right to restore the occupied Golan fully and with all legitimate means\u00a0enshrined in the UN Charter and the international law.<\/p>\n
He added that the UN member states’ support for\u00a0the resolution sent a clear message to Israel that it is merely no more than an occupying\u00a0authority and that its occupation and human rights violations are unacceptable and must\u00a0end immediately.<\/p>\n
With the Israeli delegation being the only one to\u00a0vote against the resolution, it has proved the isolation of the Israeli policies at\u00a0the UN, with this isolation being the best legal punishment for Israel over its\u00a0continued occupation of the Syrian Golan, al- Jaafari said.<\/p>\n
Thanking the countries which voted in favor of the\u00a0resolution, al-Jaafari also underlined that a small number of delegations\u00a0abstained from voting, calling upon them to join the international consensus later by\u00a0voting in the resolution’s favor when it will be put forth to the General Assembly in the\u00a0coming days.<\/p>\n
