New York, SANA – The UN General Assembly (UNGA)\u00a0reiterated demand that Israel comply with the\u00a0Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution no.\u00a0497 for 1981 which declared Israel’s decision of\u00a014 December 1981 to impose its laws and jurisdiction\u00a0on the Syrian Golan as “null and void and without international legal effect”.<\/p>\n
During a session on Tuesday, the UNGA adopted a\u00a0resolution titled “Occupied Syrian Golan” after it\u00a0was endorsed by the Special Political and\u00a0Decolonization Committee (the Fourth Committee).<\/p>\n
The resolution was adopted with 163 in favor out\u00a0of 193 countries, 1 against (Israel), and a number\u00a0of abstentions, including the US and Canada.<\/p>\n
The resolution called upon Israel to rescind its\u00a0decision of annexing the occupied Golan, and to\u00a0desist from changing the physical character, demographic\u00a0composition, institutional structure and legal\u00a0status of the occupied Syrian Golan, as these measures are\u00a0null and void, asserting that all relevant\u00a0provisions of the Regulations annexed to the Hague Convention of\u00a01907, and the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War,\u00a0continued to apply to the Syrian territory\u00a0occupied by Israel since 1967.<\/p>\n
It also called upon Israel to desist from imposing\u00a0Israeli citizenship and identity cards on Syrian citizens and to stop its provocative measures\u00a0against them.<\/p>\n
The resolution called upon the UN member states to\u00a0not recognize the Israeli measures and procedures adopted in the occupied Syrian Golan as they\u00a0constitute a breach of the international law.<\/p>\n
