New York, SANA- The UN Security Council (UNSC)\u00a0stressed that the Astana talks on the crisis in\u00a0Syria, which were held in the Kazakh capital on January\u00a023-24, represents a significant step for\u00a0relaunching the intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva under the auspices\u00a0of the UN .<\/p>\n
The two day-Astana meeting on the crisis in Syria\u00a0stressed in its final statement commitment to\u00a0Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial\u00a0integrity.<\/p>\n
The statement also reiterated that the only\u00a0solution to the crisis in Syria would be through a\u00a0political process. It announced the formation of a\u00a0tripartite mechanism to observe the cessation of\u00a0hostilities, stressing intention to fight terrorism.<\/p>\n
The members of the Security Council said in a\u00a0statement that they look forward to the resumption\u00a0of intra -Syrian negotiations, and encourage in the context\u00a0the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria\u00a0Staffan de Mistura to reconvene the negotiations as soon\u00a0as possible in Geneva, urging the Syrian parties\u00a0to participate in the negotiations in good faith and\u00a0without preconditions.<\/p>\n
The UNSC stressed the need to observe the\u00a0ceasefire in Syria and continue the efforts on\u00a0political settlement of the crisis. They also called to\u00a0fight against terrorist groups.<\/p>\n
On Monday, de Mistura announced in a press\u00a0conference following a closed doors UNSC meeting,\u00a0that he made the decision to postpone the date for the restart\u00a0of the talks in Geneva until February 20.<\/p>\n
