Al-Shaibani, EU Director-General for Middle East discuss ways to enhance cooperation in Syria’s recovery

Damascus, SANA- Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani met Thursday, the EU Director-General for the Middle East, Stefano Sannino and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in Syria’s recovery and stabilization efforts.
Sannino expressed the EU’s readiness to assist in capacity building, rehabilitating facilities, enhancing financial inclusion, and providing direct support to Syrian institutions.

Minister al-Shaibani said that the past five months have witnessed unprecedented progress following the lifting of sanctions, pointing to the launch of the Transitional Justice Committee, the People’s Assembly and the Permanent Constitutional Committee.

Al-Shaibani emphasized the significant challenges, including ongoing Israeli threats, the lack of effective mechanisms for the return of displaced persons, the slow implementation of agreements by the Syrian Democratic Forces and the urgent need to rebuild infrastructure in vital sectors.

The two sides also discussed how to shift support from refugee host communities to support return and integration within Syria, emphasizing the importance of a hybrid approach that combines early recovery and reconstruction.

The European Union expressed strong interest in promoting regional integration through renewable energy, attracting private sector investment, and supporting startups through training programs, business incubators, and other initiatives.
