New York, SANA-UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the fossil fuel era is “failing and crumbling,” and that we are now living at the dawn of a new clean energy era.
The UN News Center quoted Guterres as saying in a special address at Headquarters on Wednesday, entitled “A Clean Energy Future Is Now a fact”: “A new energy era in which clean energy powers a world rich in economic opportunity
Mr. Guterres underscored that a clean energy future “is no longer a promise, it is a fact”. No government, no industry and no special interest can stop it.
Guterres pointed to data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) showing that more than 90 percent of new renewable energy sources worldwide produce electricity at a lower cost than the cheapest new fossil fuel alternatives.
Guterres announced the release of a special technical report prepared by the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Team outlining the actions needed to accelerate a just energy transition globally.
