Heavy rains in Taiwan leave four dead and dozens injured

TAIPEI, SANA –Taiwanese authorities announced Monday that the continuous heavy rains over the past few days in the central and southern parts of the country have caused the death of four people, injured 74 others, and left three missing.

“A total of 5,795 people have been evacuated, 140 road and tunnel closures have been reported, and 124 rockfalls have occurred,” Xinhua news agency quoted the country’s emergency operations center as saying in a statement. “The rainstorm also caused power outages to hundreds of homes, and several regions have issued red alerts for landslides.”

The center noted that 108 monitoring stations in Taiwan recorded rainfall exceeding 200 mm, while accumulated rainfall over the past week at one site in Kaohsiung City reached 2,759 mm, exceeding the island’s annual average of 2,500 mm.

The meteorological department has forecast that heavy downpours may continue in the central and southern regions over the coming days. In response, work and classes have been suspended in several cities.
