Canada to officially recognize Palestine at upcoming UN Assembly, Says PM

Ottawa, SANA-Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced his country’s intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September. This move would align Canada with several other nations that have declared similar intentions in the same international forum.

During a press conference, Carney said, “Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,” considering this shift in Ottawa’s position necessary to preserve the two-state solution.

He added, “Canada condemns the Israeli government’s creation of conditions for a catastrophe in Gaza, as the reality on the ground, including widespread hunger in Gaza, means that the opportunity for the establishment of a Palestinian state is fading before our eyes”.

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, during a phone call, praised Canada’s historic position of recognizing the State of Palestine, which will enhance peace and stability in the region and comes at a crucial moment to save the internationally supported two-state solution.
