Firefighting teams combat forest fires in Hama and Latakia

Damascus, SANA – The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management announced Thursday it has dispatched support teams to assist fire teams who are battling wild fires in the Hama and Latakia, in very difficult weather conditions.

The ministry explained in a statement that firefighters face difficult challenges due to strong winds, high temperatures, and difficult mountainous terrain. They also face difficulties working in some areas that lack fire lines and nearby water sources.

In the Latakia countryside, teams are fighting fires broke out in Jabal Turkmen, including Talat al-Nisr and Kasab, in addition to a forest fire between the villages of Kafrta and Bala in Jabal al-Akrad area, the statement added.

Meanwhile, fire teams have managed to stop the spread of the fire on the Beit Yashout-Latakia Road, with cooling and monitoring operations continuing to prevent re-ignition, the ministry said.

In the Hama countryside, firefighting teams, in cooperation with civilians, are working to extinguish and prevent the fires from reaching homes, especially in the villages of Abu Kleifon and Anab, where fires spread due to strong winds, high temperatures, and difficult terrain.

Syria is experiencing the peak of the fire season this year due to heat waves and drought, which increase the flammability of forests and woodlands, especially in mountainous areas with high forest density.
