UNRWA: One Million women and girls in Gaza facing real famine

New York, SANA – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that one million women and girls in the Gaza Strip are facing a “real famine” amid the ongoing Israeli blockade and continued military aggression against the region.

In a statement published Saturday on the platform X, UNRWA reported that women and girls in Gaza are enduring “mass famine,” compounded by violence and abuse stemming from the catastrophic humanitarian conditions that have sharply deteriorated since October 7, 2023.

The statement stressed that women and girls are being forced to adopt extremely dangerous survival strategies, including searching for food and water under life-threatening conditions. It cautioned that many are exposing themselves to the risk of being killed while attempting to secure basic necessities.

UNRWA reiterated its call for the immediate lifting of the blockade on Gaza, home to more than two million people, and urged the unrestricted entry of food and humanitarian assistance to help mitigate the worsening crisis.

The Gaza Strip is currently experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian emergency, which has deepened since March 2, as Israeli authorities closed all border crossings, causing widespread hunger and acute shortages of food and medical supplies.
